Seat and Gears: Mountain Biking for Women
For some women, learning how to mountain bike is quite a challenging endeavor. There are some ladies who experience serious comfort issues with their bike saddles, while there are some whose concerns are about the right mountain biking gear and clothing.
While sitting on the mountain bike for hours at a time is never a particularly pleasant activity especially on one’s bottom side, mountain biking doesn’t have to be an activity that tests a woman’s ability to endure pain. Male and female bodies alike need some time to adjust to riding a mountain bike, and for a beginner, it may take at least three rides within a couple of weeks for the body to adjust to sitting on a mountain bike seat. In order to feel a little more comfortable, some women prefer to purchase a women’s specific bicycle seat which is a little wider compared to the typical bike seat. On the other hand, women with narrow hip structure may find the typical bike seat quite okay and just settle with finding the suitable clothes that can help make biking more comfortable. Women’s biking or cycling shorts have wider pads compared to men’s. These pads provide added protection at the right place other than the crotch area.
Nowadays, women are also spoilt for choices when it comes to biking accessories such as cycling gloves, helmets, arm and leg warmers, bandanas and socks.
Sports: Women’s Tool in Improving Health
Hundreds of studies have shown the important role sports and exercise play in increasing physical strength and cardiovascular endurance, as well as in decreasing the chances of osteoporosis, back problems, strokes, heart attacks and other health problems. Certainly, men are not the only ones who have the right to such activities.
From the ancient times to a century not so very long ago, women were not allowed to compete in sports. Different traditions, norms, beliefs and even gender discrimination have caused people to think that it was indecent, ugly and preposterous to allow women to compete in sports especially in the competitions that require great strength, endurance, and speed. Even Baron de Coubertin, the founder of modern Olympic Games, had opposed to women competing in sports in his concerns about the exposure of the female physicality via public sports competitions. He believed that the spectators who gather to female sports competitions are “not there to watch a sport”. However, through the constant pursuit of many organizations and agencies to promote gender equality, women were finally allowed to join sports and participate in competitions.
Joining sports has also allowed women to seek physical health, fitness and good body shape through physical training and exercise as opposed to unhealthy options such as crash diets.
